THE IDEA:
Sew is a short documentary portrait of Nunette, a mail-order bride that moved from the Philippines to the UK in the 1980’s—only to wind up running her own mail-order bride agency. After years of working in the industry, Nunette retired and started a career in her true passion: sewing. In this short, Nunette reflects on her somewhat controversial past; sharing stories of her childhood, and thoughts on the mail-order bride industry.

THE PROCESS:
To tell Nunettes story, we transformed an old sewing machine museum into a factory, and dressed rooms to look like her house and shop front. I wanted the backgrounds to look as natural and lived-in as possible: with lots of little details that intrigued audiences, but don’t distract from Nunettes words.
