About me

I am Beatrice Darwell-Taylor and have recently graduated from Wimbledon College of Arts in Costume Design for Theatre and Screen.

I have a passion for costume, both historical and contemporary and like to both design and take part in the making process. I like to define myself as the handy (wo)man of costume since I have developed a variety of skills that allow me to be useful in a team of creatives. My skills vary from the use of latex to tailoring, prop making, millinery and pattern cutting. I pride myself for my constant desire to learn new skills.

During my time at university I have collaborated with the Academy of Recorded and Live Arts during their production of Alice in Wonderland and with my peer, I was part of the design team that had the responsibility to not only design but make or source costume for the show. We also organised the wardrobe and provided constant help to the show.

Recently, my freelance experience has been useful for upcoming short films where I not only was hired as a Designer, but as a the Head of my department, with the responsibility to, where applicable, source and make costumes, manage and keep constant communication with directors and production designers, professionally conduct fittings with actors, organise daily tasks and goals to achieve before deadlines. Here, time management and budgeting were essential skills to develop, as I have worked often with short deadlines and tight budgets.

I also have some theatre experience as I designed and supervised costumes for charitable productions. Again budgeting was key in delivering high standard costumes that have been sourced and made for the actors.

I would like to expand this experience by learning more. I hope to gain new confidence in my costume practise and new experience by working in the department.
