ABOUT

School pupils spend a lot of time online and, unfortunately for them, that’s where most misinformation lives. In the run up to exams, we wanted students to revise on BBC Bitesize over less trustworthy websites. Don’t Learn off Randoms utilised characters we all recognise to draw in scrolling students before delivering the harsh truth: that online information can come from some really random people. A mix of paid and organic social helped reach 90% of our target audience (15-17-year-olds) and brought 23% new users to the platform. Sorry Flat Earthers.

How do we get GCSE students to revise on the exam board-approved BBC Bitesize over less trustworthy online sources? 15–17-year-olds are always online and often opt for YouTube or Wikipedia to assist their revision. But this information can be contributed by anyone. So, we wanted an idea that reminded them of this in the lead up to their final exams. Don’t Learn off Randoms spoke in the language of teens and appeared on the social platforms they spend most time on. As they scrolled Tik Tok and Instagram, our mock social films drew them in, made them reconsider how unreliable online information can be, then pointed them to the solution: a trusted revision platform purpose built for UK students
