Ayse Ezgi Yildiz Freelance Designer & Illustrator

ABOUT

This project, created within the scope of Project Zoom, an impact journalism grant program initiated by Impact Hub Istanbul and the U.S. Consulate General in Istanbul, examines the relation between food supply chains and virulent diseases by focusing on industrial farming and global food production systems. The illustrations were intended to provide visual aid for eight articles, which were published on vesaire, an independent online magazine of culture, arts, criticism and politics. The main objective was to create an awareness around public health, particularly the systemic causes of COVID-19.

In order for the illustrations to have a coherent style, a minimal concept based on 2D vector drawings and a color palette of black, white and red was created. The color red was used for elements that required further emphasis, while textures were added to provide a sense of depth. The aim here was to create an experience that would relay the topic at hand to the reader with ease. The figures of humans were depicted without a very realistic approach, which represented their distance from nature itself. Illustrations were made by Adobe Illustrator and edited with Adobe Photoshop.

Between 11 October 2020 and 17 December 2020, vesaire attained a website reach of around 150K. Thousands of social media users also were able to see the posts on vesaire’s Facebook (22,506 likes), Twitter (12,963 followers) and Instagram (46,204 followers) accounts.
