ABOUT
Wired Brands changed from Wired Events in December 2012. Their new design contained a modern vertical layout using high density of content and minimal of navigation - Home, Work and Play.
Appfly built an agile content management system in Ruby on Rails to allow for updates of all content on the site in a flexible and rapid manner. The CMS allows for draft and previewing mechanisms allowing for better managed content creation.
Assets such as images were automatically tailored in the backend to the multiple sizes required throughout the site, allowing for the administrator only to upload a single image each time, rather than cropping/resizing themselves.
The front end provided some interesting technical challenges, stretching the capabilities of CSS and HTML5 abilities. Images on the home page can be seen in black and white, reflected below - these two effects achieved with CSS only. Typekit fonts were used in a method allowing multiple weights across a page but with minimal of CPU usage.
JQuery was applied lightly to allow for transitions and AJAX loads of new content, with no-script fallback available, allowing Google to corectly index the site.
Other integrations such as Twitter, promoting Wired's latest messages and a novel method of displaying Google Maps stretched across the page infinitiely, rather than a standard small box.
