ABOUT

Ernest Hemingway named Venice among his five hometowns, and the Gritti Hotel was practically his home in this beloved city. In the late forties, he wrote the novel "Across the River and into the Trees," which can be considered largely autobiographical. The entire plot is filled with the love of the elderly Colonel Richard Cantwell and the nineteen-year-old Countess Renata. They spend these few days, the last in the Colonel's life, at the Gritti Hotel and its environs. Several days spent in love, together, in places dear to the heart.
