ABOUT
To bring awareness to the reality that less than 2% of all popular music is produced by women, The Recording Academy used the power of music to highlight the staggering gap in professional inclusion.
In this simple, stripped-down film, a fifty-woman-strong, all-female choir performs a choral arrangement of Alicia Key’s single “Underdog.” One by one we see the women in the choir sit down and stop singing until only one woman—2%—remains. Like the song, our film is dedicated to people working for a better life, doing what they love. And, as a part of the #WomenInTheMix inclusion initiative, the spot highlights the need for more women in producing and engineering roles. With this inspiring message and a creative and production team of almost all women, we knew we had the power to make a film that could bring recognition to lack of representation and inclusion in the music industry.
