ABOUT

This project was an assignment during my Masters. The module studied “modernity” in literature, and the task here was to explore the new genres it created. A relevant note is that of my class of forty, this project was the only one that addressed this essay topic.
Executing the task required a close-reading of two short novels, with thorough planning and research around these central texts. This research and development stage offered an opportunity for spontaneity and imagination, as the different aspects of studies were shaped by my own logic, reason and critical thinking ability.
Top marks were received for this piece, but I include it here because it demonstrates some of my key attributes. It shows an ability to engage with multiple complex concepts and construct a strong argument out of my own understanding. It shows my enduring curiosity about “humanity”, which can lead to interesting insights in the human subject. It demonstrates also the understanding of the literary craft and its technical components: plot, character, narrative devices, themes etc.
This project demanded self-motivation, focus and discipline to complete, and the hard work resulted in a compelling discussion about literature in its own right, but also how it conveys messages about psychology and social constructs that are worth pondering.
