ABOUT
The Beer Experience app was one of my favourite projects. My company worked very closely with Bavaria S.A.S., one of the biggest companies in Colombia. Bavaria is a traditional beer producer that is now owned by the AB InBev group.
We developed a very close relationship with the company and they trusted us with their biggest tech-related project at the moment: to develop an app capable of recognizing any beer that is available in Colombia via AR technology and provide users with relevant information about the beer’s history, type of beer and suggested recipes to go with the beer. The app would also show the customers where to find the required ingredients to prepare the recipes at the closest partnered supermarket chain.
Our main challenge with this project was the users’ perception and even fear of the QR technology.
For this reason, I decided to not go with traditional QR codes because at the time even the most tech-savvy Colombian users were not used to this technology, and the average users were reluctant to even try to scan them. Our solution to this problem was to create custom AR markers for each of the 135 beers available in the country, many of which required over 5 possible trackers so that the app would recognize them through different light conditions.
This proved to be a very successful UX decision as the fear of using a challenging technology was easily overcome by a clean and intuitive UI design developed by a very thorough series of early stages usability tests with a variety of users.
