About me

My name is Aïcha Thiam, and I am very interested in applying to jobs in the Music, Publishing/Editorial and Film/Media fields: I've always aspired for a future surrounded by riveting people and bright ideas, as well as compelling outlets for beautiful stories and boundless creativity.

I attended the University of Montréal where, in my field of Communications, I notably created marketing campaigns for real and fictional organizations. I am currently finishing my Second BA in Music and Creative Writing at Columbia College Chicago, where some of my writing has been published. For the last three years, I've been an occasional contributor for l'ARgot, the official French-language Art History magazine of the University of Montréal, which has included writing interview questions for guest artists, as well as art columns on culture and independent films. I recently launched my own website Maelstrom, which is a collection of essays and articles that dissect popular culture at the intersection of mental illness, racism, etc., and write frequently on Medium. A film critique of mine can be found at BRIGHT WALL/DARK ROOM.

I understand that a career in the arts would entail meticulousness, a strong mastery of words and the ability to multitask and execute decisions swiftly: these are skills I am excited to be able to bring forth, but which I also hope to refine. My autonomy is one of my greatest strengths, but I'm also passionate about coming together with others, to bring common goals to fruition. Additionally, I am eager to understand the behind-the-scenes process of these industries and receive constructive criticism, all the while contributing in any way that I can.

I am a musician and illustrator, but as a writer first and foremost, my devotion to stories and the written word is infinite because I believe in their power to thrill, stun, and alter lives: that is what they have often done for me. They will never let me down as long as I trust in what they can do. As a very recent Editor, Editorial Consultant and First Reader for Reckoning, FLAPPERHOUSE and Strange Horizons respectively, it has been an absolute pleasure to explore that passion of mine. I feel that every milestone in my life has led me to pursue a career where my artistry is valued and appreciated.

I am, and always will be, willing to learn on my feet; it would be an honor to be part of some of the most fearless and respected establishments in publishing, music production and media. I hope that the artistic and literary skills I bring, as well as my multicultural and multilingual backgrounds, will be great assets to their successes.
