ABOUT

The spot, dubbed “A Great Day in Hollywood,” was inspired by the famed 1958 photograph A Great Day in Harlem, which featured 57 jazz legends—including Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, and Count Basie—on the steps of a New York brownstone, captured by photographer Art Kane.

The Netflix spot, directed by Lacey Duke, featured 47 Black writers, showrunners, actors, and producers. The concept for the spot and the accompanying image campaign stemmed from Netflix’s Strong Black Lead initiative, which was designed to foster an ongoing, intentional focus on communicating authentically with the Black audience. A photograph reminiscent of "A Great Day in Harlem" was taken earlier that month by photographer Kwaku Alston to commemorate the gathering.
