ABOUT

2022 truly was a “special" year for China. Despite everything that has happened, the people continued to overcome each challenge and obstacle, one after another. In this CNY, we want to celebrate this resilient spirit of the Chinese people, with a film showcasing the most traditional art form—Chinese Opera. With over 800 years of history, Chinese Opera is one of the oldest dramatic art forms in the world. The fluid yet precise movements, the costumes embellished with rich colors and patterns, the stage, the music…all of it comes together to create a one-of-a-kind visual spectacle. And at the heart of it: the spirit of resilience. The saying “one minute onstage, ten years offstage” encapsulates a lifetime of commitment, dedication, and hardship. We have partnered with Director Peng Fei, who hails from a Chinese Opera family and best known for his Venice Film Festival award-winning film, "Underground Fragrance”. This film is a coming-of-age story set during a crucial turning point in Chinese Opera history, It revolves arounda resilient young man who goes against all odds to be onstage doing what he has devoted his life to, even if just for five minutes. This film marks the 6th installment of Apple’s Chinese New Year film series, giving us the perfect stage to use the "latest technology” of iPhone to capture the intriguing beauty of this ancient art form, using only the phone’s three original lenses.
