Luton has a long association with the hat industry, both in this country and around the world. One of the museum’s significant collections, are 700 hats and pieces of headwear from the trade and retail sections of industry. In the Luton Life Gallery, visitors can learn about the breadth of Luton’s industry and hear about the working life of people who made their living from hats.

The first stage was to plan plan the exhibition design. I wanted to be bold and creative in the use of imagery, text and colour. My main priority was to engage the visitor and keep their attention while walking through the galleries. I also wanted to showcase some of the panels on an angle, which leant movement. The bold use of large text in red, blocks and bands, a running theme throughout the graphic panels, and a combination of both colour and black and white imagery created dramatic effect and a powerful dynamic.
