ABOUT

CHALLENGE:
Marine science and ecotourism organisations typically communicate in one of two registers: the dry, academic tone of scientific institutions, or the generic, stock-photo aesthetic of tourist operators. Neither builds a brand that can simultaneously attract tourists for whale watching, engage students and researchers for citizen science, and earn the trust of the local community and conservation bodies. The challenge was to create an identity that carried scientific credibility and emotional resonance at the same time — a brand as wide and deep as the ecosystem it protects.

IDEA:
Build the entire brand from the name outward — and make every syllable carry meaning. BIO (Greek: life) — the reason for being: study, protection, and interaction with biomes. SEA — the field of action: the marine ecosystem, its fauna, its interdependencies. N — the conjugation in present tense of the verb "to be" in Spanish: son — because this is a company of action, not intention. Hidden inside the name is the word OCEAN, a reminder that the seas are part of a whole, and that doing this work well means achieving oceans of awareness.

The logomark is a geometric synthesis of a whale — the primary species of study — abstracted into minimal lines and a triangle, creating an emblem that reads as simultaneously scientific, elegant, and alive. It works as a standalone icon across uniforms, vessels, signage, and digital channels.

Brand voice — campaign line:
"Brothers of the same Father Ocean and the same Mother Earth."

MY CONTRIBUTION - CREATIVE DIRECTOR:
As Creative Director, I conceived and built the complete Biosean brand identity — from naming rationale and logo concept through to visual system, campaign line, and uniform design. My contribution covered:
-Naming architecture: I designed the name Biosean as a multi-layered linguistic construct — three meanings in four syllables, with OCEAN hidden inside. The name works in Spanish and English, speaks to scientists and tourists equally, and carries the brand's mission in its structure.
-Logo & geometric whale mark: I created the logomark as an abstract geometric whale — minimal lines, a triangle as the body, the spout as a V-form — that can operate independently as a standalone emblem. The mark is scientific in its precision and emotional in its subject, bridging both worlds the brand inhabits.
-Visual identity system: I built the full colour and typography system — deep black ocean as background, teal for BIO (life, science), orange for SEA (warmth, encounter) — applied consistently across print, digital, and vessel and field equipment.
-Uniform & field identity design: I directed the full team identity — branded field vests, red and navy wind jackets, and lightweight technical jackets — each personalised and bearing the whale mark. The team's visual presence on sea and land is a moving brand impression for every tourist and researcher who encounters them.
-Campaign line & brand voice: I wrote the campaign line — "Hermanos del mismo Padre Océano y de la misma Madre Tierra" (Brothers of the same Father Ocean and the same Mother Earth) — establishing the emotional and philosophical register of all Biosean communications: intimate, urgent, and profoundly connected.
