ABOUT

The current epidemic of unwanted loneliness among the elderly remains invisible to Spanish society. “la Caixa” Foundation is working to bring visibility to a reality hidden behind the doors of more than 3 million homes.

Escape Room Loneliness transformed the real experiences of three elderly people into an immersive experience. Over 40 years of loneliness were documented and transformed into a living space. Inside, the voice of renowned actress Mercedes Sampietro and a custom-designed soundscape immersed visitors in the routines, fears, and nightmares of an elderly person living in isolation, with only memories for company.

For the first time, we enabled 20.000 people to experience firsthand what unwanted loneliness truly means.

The media impact was immediate. The story of Escape Room Loneliness caught the attention of Spain’s leading news outlets—television, print, digital media, and radio stations. Not only did they report on the experience, but they also interviewed the individuals who inspired it, amplifying the conversation and generating:
• €2M in earned media.
• A 220% increase in reach compared to similar campaigns in the sector.

Escape Room Loneliness was not just a campaign. It was an experience that transformed how thousands of people perceive loneliness. And, for the first time, it made an invisible reality impossible to ignore:
• 127 million impressions
• The campaign led to a 35% increase in calls requesting help compared to the previous year, allowing the program to assist 2,898 new people

As a result of the project's great impact, 'la Caixa' Foundation is currently working to make this experience available soon in more than 13 cities across Spain and Portugal.
