Alannah Grogan Production Assistant

ABOUT

The Feature Film In Search of Fear is an Indonesian released production that is based on the story that follows five student friends who are determined to prank their friends, but their plans don't go the way they expected.

I had many roles on set, the first being the production assistant/runner. It was my responsibility to make sure all cast and crew were in the right place, pick up props and help design the set. Within this, it was also my responsibility to proof-read the scripts with the cast before filming, help operate the boom mic and set aside time to prepare food and drinks for the whole cast and crew.

However, my other roles included being in charge of continuity errors. It was vital for me to take pictures of all cast before each scene, create a spreadsheet that had the exact scene and character so when refilming scenes or continuing to film scenes the characters were dressed accordingly. This also applied for the days where extras would also come in.

Similarly, my continuity role was also linked with my head of wardrobe role. Responsibilities included following a brief outline from the producer and director on how they envision the cast to look and creating different outfits to meet these goals. It was important that I understood the character and what emotional needs and traits they portrayed in order to create a look that emphasised this. With little wardrobe budget and little direction, the styling was a success as no negative comments were made by either the producer or direction and no styling was changed.

With no prior experience within any of the above roles, it has been a challenge that was great to through myself into. The key aspects that I learned from this project included using my own initiative to get things done, rather than asking someone all the time. A further emphasis on my communication skills were heightened as working with people from different countries and backgrounds enabled me to expand different approaches with my communication. However, my creative ability was also enhanced as seeking new ways of doing things, creating sets and styling cast for a feature film were all new tasks to me.

Above all, this project has taught me how to take risks and dive into new opportunities. It doesn't matter about having the right experience, if you have the right mind-set, determination and are willing to come out of your comfort zone, you will succeed at the role.
