In the series “Landscape with…” and “Still Life with…” I stage a deliberate reorientation of the canonical genres of landscape and still life. Rather than presenting these classical themes as autonomous subjects, the compositions function as composite portraits—landscapes and still lifes that encode the intellectual, historical and formal concerns of their subjects. Biographical allusion, typographic motifs, recurrent pictorial tropes and quotations from the Old Masters comprise a semiotic apparatus. Created in my personal technique, which straddles drawing and printmaking, the works invite close, iterative looking and offer multiple registers of signification for viewers to decode.
