This project was a live industry brief, set by Todd & Duncan, the leading Scottish dyer, spinner and supplier of high quality yarn company. We were set the task of using a variety of their luxury yarns to design and create a range of knitted fabrics which promote the quality of the yarn focusing on stitch structure, weight and handle. My initial starting point for this project came from a contemporary design book, i decided to focus on the concept of negative space and creating that within my knitted fabrics. I started by looking at paper manipulation and creating repeated cutout sections combined with folding techniques, i then also used these as a sort of stencil to create negative images and pattern to take through to my fabrics. This technique resulted in a variety of repeated geometric patterns in a neutral colour palette. I then progressed in to my fabrics development using the supplied yarns, focusing on the finer 100% cashmere quality yarns to achieve a desirable drape and weight. I used a variety if fine gauge machines, including 10 gauge dubiet, 12 gauge shima seiki, and fine gauge domestic. I achieved the desired effect within my fabrics by using techniques such as; tuck stitch, single bed transfer, front/back bed transfer, and also racked rib stitch. The end result was a collection of fragile and delicate fabrics, with a beautiful handle and drape.
