ABOUT
This project was innovation lead, based on the idea of coming up with new and interesting ways to create innovative textiles. I have carried over my theme of distortion from previous projects, but looking at a fresh approach to creating distorted pattern within knitwear. I decided to combine the disciplines of print and knit together in this project, using disperse dyes and a heat transfer machine to create colour and pattern on undyed wool. My starting point was to knit up plain single bed fabrics, I then proceeded to heat transfer regular geometric shapes on to both sides of the fabric in bright contrasting colours. After this process, I then unraveled the fabrics and spun them back on to cones and went on to re-knit the yarn in a 1x1 rib structure to see how the patterns would change. This resulted in many different and exciting patterns within the final fabrics, each one being unique. I found that I got the best result with the more simple geometric starting point of regular vertical stripes, which when re-knitted resulted in a blurred stripe effect. This was an extremely exciting project for me, to be able to release my creativity and explore unconventional avenues within textiles.
For this project I was nominated to represent my university in the Scottish regional heats for the SDC International design competition for use of colour. Although I wasn't successful in getting through the heat, many of the judges relayed that they had never seen anything like it before and i received recognition for my innovation.
