International contest ‘SEVERNO SIYANIE’ was created by Vili Ikonomov in 1966, carrying the name ‘Young talents’. Back then it was on national level and co-organizers where the Ruse youth home and vocal-instrumental band ‘Compass’. On that stage their first professional steps made the Bulgarian singers Deyan Nedelchev, Atanas Kolev, Rosica Bordjieva, Sunai Chalakov, Roksana Beleva, Diana Aleksandrova etc.

Through the years the contest had changed and in 1998 his creator gave him new name, which he carries up to this moment - ‘SEVERNO SIYANIE’ (‘Northern Lights’). With every next edition it became more popular and in 2000 it had his first guests from abroad. Today singers from Romania, Russia, Kossovo and Montenegro are the most often participants in the contest.

From 2006 organisers of International contest ‘SEVERNO SIYANIE’ became the vocal studio for jazz & pop singing ‘Ikonomov’ and ‘Severno siyanie’ Association, with the support of Ruse Municipality.

In 2010 the contest became a member of WAFA (World Association of Festivals and Artists).

Affirmation of the singing art
Giving a chance to talented children to be on the stage
Forum of Vocal studios and coaches
Partnership between the different vocal studios and experience exchange

The event takes place once every year.

With his more than 40 years history, the competition has affirmed itself with its traditions in the singing art and is a true part of the culture life of Ruse, candidate city for European capital of culture 2019.
