London’s only floating cinema returns to the Thames for a sequel season

Published by

London’s only floating cinema will return to the Thames this summer. Time Out, the global brand that inspires people to make the most of the city, is bringing back Movies on the River in partnership with City Cruises, sailing five nights a week throughout summer. The season kicks off with Romeo + Juliet on June 13 and Oscar-winner The Shape of Water on June 14.

Following the success of Time Out’s Movies on the River last summer, the exciting addition to the capital’s thriving pop-up cinema scene returns to the River Thames to give locals and visitors a unique chance to watch movies on the top deck of a boat. Tickets are now on sale from £29 via timeout.com's e-commerce platform.

Movies on the River is part of Time Out’s growing Live Events programme in cities around the world, not only writing about a city’s best experiences, but also creating them. Time Out is uniquely placed to curate and deliver these events, bringing to life the best of the city through unusual experiences at unexpected and often iconic venues. Think ‘silent discos’ in Paris Zoo and The Shard and ‘Movies at the Museum’ in London’s Natural History Museum.

Guests of Movies on the River will enjoy a sunset cruise from Tower Bridge, past the Tate Modern, St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Southbank, before returning east to dock and watch the movie. Moviegoers will settle down in front of the big screen as the sun sets on the open-air deck of the sleek cruise boat City Alpha. The on-board bar will offer a selection of snacks and drinks and the unusual perspective of London’s iconic views will make this a night to remember.

Cruising through the city, film lovers will get to enjoy watery classic Jaws, award-winners The Shape of Water and Dunkirk, recent blockbusters including Get Out, Baby Driver and The Greatest Showman, as well as romantic and comedy classics such as Romeo + Juliet, Grease, Mean Girls and Ghostbusters – all based on Time Out’s curation.

Dave Calhoun, Director, Global Business Development Film & Entertainment at Time Out, comments: “We’re thrilled to be returning to the Thames this summer after the success of Movies on the River last year. Time Out is uniquely placed to curate and create events like this; we’ve always been known for helping people make the most of the city. Working together with our partner City Cruises, we’ve created an exclusive and memorable experience for Londoners and visitors alike.

Thousands of Londoners can hop aboard and watch an old favourite in new surroundings, or catch one of the recent award-winning blockbusters if they missed it, all after sailing up the Thames past the city’s most famous sites.”

Prices start from £29.00 including sunset cruise and open-air screening and tickets can be booked via Time Out’s website.
