ABOUT
Creative studio, NewTerritory, unveils Human Nature, a forward-thinking conceptual product range that explores the future of microdosing and its potential application in health and wellbeing. In response to promising research around the positive effects of using psycho-active substances as mood-enhancers, NewTerritory explores how innovation and product design can deliver superior consumer experiences.
A carefully designed product range has been envisioned using design language driven by the notion of breath and the flow of air, under the idea that using these products becomes a natural meditative experience in controlled doses, rather than hyper synthetic.
The ‘space set’ base product, with supporting mouthpiece capsules, are able to hold a number of different mood-altering compounds in a microdose format. The compound-hosting capsules, which attach to the base product, would be part of a personalised pack and delivered directly to the consumer. This all sits within the centre of a product ecosystem that includes a smartphone app and a compostable tracker to support users in personalising and planning their micro-dosing weekly rituals. The final core product fulfils the functional aspect of piercing the capsule to deliver the drug whilst grounding the product in a domestic setting.
With experience innovation and considered packaging design at its centre, the concept targets four key areas of human wellbeing which have been labelled as:
Dream: Using Melatonin, this product decelerates the mind, igniting the parasympathetic nervous system.
Relax: Using CBD, this product releases cognitive tension, aligning mind and body to limit the production of stress hormones.
Focus: Using Lysergic Acid Diethylamide, this product engages the sensory function, improving short-term memory and increasing concentration.
Create: Using Psilocybin, this product enables divergent thinking, increasing ideation and expressional fluency.
The final product design arose from refining and honing in on research around future materiality such as advancements in 3D printing, regenerative and biodegradable materials and increasingly commercially available materials like foam glass and reusable silicons.
James Ravenhall, Creative Director, NewTerritory commented: “Our overriding motivation behind this project surrounded the changing perceptions of what drugs of this nature can provide for the human psyche. It’s as much an educational project as it is a practical one. We want to imagine a world where a tailored microdosing platform can support cognitive brain functions - in fighting depression and sleep deprivation, for instance - and to ask what this might look and feel like.”
NewTerritory has imagined a world where a tailored microdosing platform can take its place alongside other contemporary wellbeing practices. With immense research exploring the therapeutic potential of micro-dosing these mood-altering drugs, there is great potential for developing a home administered compound.
Psychedelics are undergoing a renaissance, with research into the therapeutic properties of these drugs, notably from Imperial College London and Johns Hopkins Medicine, providing encouraging data on the positive effects of their use as alternative therapies. Recent research also suggests the market is projected to reach $10.75 billion by 2027, following a similar trajectory to the cannabis and CBD industries.
