ABOUT

This project was for a new organization called Girls Make Games which holds camps for girls ages 8-17 and teaches them how to make games. The girls come up with the concepts for the games, and how it will work, and then that information is given to some professional artists who are brought in to design the different components of the game for the girls to animate and program. I was called in as a fill-in illustrator after a friend of mine in one of the teams got sick, and was asked to work on the backgrounds and UI buttons for the game Nico. This game was based off of Greek mythology and tells the story of a boy named Nico who manages to survive after Zeus destroys his village to prevent a prophecy of someone from that village destroying Zeus. This boy is given a phoenix avatar which he uses to fight with the monster avatars of 13 Greek deities, and ends with him defeating them all. Combat was turn based, and brought up a random sequence of symbols whose corresponding buttons needed to be pushed in the correct order before the time limit with three varying levels of difficulty. As I only had a little over a week to design 13 different backgrounds, in addition to the symbols, attack buttons, and menu buttons, a lot of elements were reused with different colors and small accessories added to each background to help them feel unique.
