The Brief

To showcase Tesco Mobile’s new, low cost European tariffs they wanted to create an engaging virtual reality experience in some of the most exciting European holiday destinations. The request was something akin to a video postcard that would transport the viewer to an exciting location and then finally make them aware that from this year they will be able to share their holiday moments with friends and family for a low cost. The experience would need to work as part of an experiential activation in 500 stores up and down the country. Above all else they should be fun and memorable, and tap into those experiences we all have and enjoy when we go on our summer holiday.

The Solution

The first challenge was where these video post cards would be filmed. We settled upon a water slide in Tenerife, a moped tour of Rome and finally a white water rafting experience in Croatia. Instead of creating a traditional series of films we were tasked with doing something unique and innovative. Using the latest technology we created the highest resolution 360 VR experience.

By creating the experience in virtual reality 360 video we would give viewers an experience unlike anything they would have experienced previously.The challenge became one of finding a way to film in 360 in such difficult environments. Our camera team came up with innovative solutions for all of the environments.

The end result is as if you are there with the tourists having fun, completely immersed in the holiday sunshine.
The final challenge was to create the same experience but featuring a celebrity. To put on a headset and feel as though you are sitting next to Mark Wright (The Only Way is Essex).

The Results

The piece played in 500 different stores across the UK and received praise in industry press for its innovation. Online it gained hundreds of thousands of views and received extra interest due to the unique river rafting and water slide experience that was created.
