Don’t Let Your CV Get Ghosted: Make it Stand Out in 5 Steps

Published

Step 1: Forget “About Me”, Show Me You!

  • Ditch the generic intro — let your experience, skills, and personality shine through.
  • Who are you outside work? Hobbies and passions reveal the awesome human behind the resume.
  • Tease your work! Showcase logos of clients you’ve impressed or industries you’ve mastered. Awards and accolades? Flaunt ‘em!

TIPS:

  1. Unleash your inner artist! Craft a custom header with your name and branding.
  2. Volunteer work shows your compassion. Highlight impactful projects that speak to your values. Eg: From Clicks to Customers: How I Turned Website Traffic into Loyal Brand Fans

Step 2: One Page, One Project. Make it a Page-Turner.

  • Think lean and mean — each page highlights a single project in dazzling detail.
  • One captivating paragraph sets the scene: who’s the client, what was your role?
  • Problem + Solution = Your Star Moment. Clearly define the challenge and your brilliant solution. Quantify impact! Did you boost sales, save time, or win hearts? Use those numbers!
  • One eye-catching visual (think infographic, chart, or even a stunning design mock-up) seals the deal.

TIPS:

  1. Did you save the day? Use action verbs like “spearheaded”, “revolutionized”, or “exceeded expectations” to describe your impact.
  2. Include a captivating subtitle for each project that sparks curiosity and draws the reader in.

Step 3: Show, Don’t Tell: Your Process Unraveled.

  • How do you work your magic? Break down your project workflow into simple steps — research, brainstorming, sketching, and so on. Imagine explaining it to a curious 7-year-old!

TIPS:

  1. Think humor! If you can make your process funny and relatable, it’ll be even more memorable.
  2. Show how your workflow adapts to different project types. Versatility is key!

Step 4: Tech Savvy Superhero Revealed

  • Tools are your weapons, so flaunt your arsenal! Mention the research, design, and project management tools you wield like a pro. Bonus points for showcasing 3D, illustration, or animation skills.

TIPS:

  1. Got coding skills? Showcase your GitHub profile.
  2. Learning new tools is a plus! Include any recent courses or certifications you’ve completed.

Step 5: Hook, Line, and Sinker: The Call to Action

  • Don’t let the recruiter fade away! Include your email, website, and an open question. Encourage them to reach out!
  • Keep your questions concise and open-ended to encourage dialogue.
  • Use keywords from the job description to demonstrate your understanding of the role.
  • Follow up within a reasonable timeframe if you haven’t heard back, expressing your continued interest.

Some examples:

  1. Showcasing your proactiveness:
  • “As I reviewed the [job title] description, I’m particularly interested in [project/responsibility]. Could you share some more details about this aspect of the role?”
  • “My experience in [relevant skill] aligns perfectly with your requirement for [specific task]. Can you tell me how I can leverage this experience to excel in the role?”
  • “I noticed you mentioned [company goal]. I have a unique approach to achieving this using [strategy]. Would you be open to a brief discussion about it?” 2. Demonstrating your research and curiosity:
  • “Your recent LinkedIn post about [company initiative] resonated with me. Could you elaborate on the challenges and opportunities you envision in this area?”
  • “I’m impressed with your company’s focus on [company value]. Can you share examples of how this value is reflected in the day-to-day work of the [department/team]?”
  • “I’m curious about your company’s [unique aspect]. Do you see this playing a significant role in the [job title] position?” 3. Sparkling a conversation and building rapport:
  • “If you were a candidate for this role, what would you consider the most important quality to possess?”
  • “I noticed you’re also passionate about [shared interest]. Do you have any employee groups or events that connect people with similar interests?”
  • “Since I align well with your requirements, is there any further information or specific aspects of my resume you’d like to discuss in more detail?”

Remember: Recruiters scan CVs, not essays. Keep it concise, impactful, and visually engaging. Think outside the box, showcase your personality, and prove you’re the missing piece their puzzle needs.

TIPS:

  1. Offer to connect on LinkedIn or professional networking platforms.
  2. Offer to provide references or case studies upon request.

Now go forth and conquer the job market, fellow career adventurers!
