ABOUT
I was asked to design and image to be converted into mural for Network Rail outside their South East HQ in Southwark London. The Mural is located on Great Suffolk St, London SE1 0NS.
I researched the history of the Southwark area and the railway viaducts which pass over the murals location. I learnt that the site on which Network Rail's HQ now sits used to be a continental goods yard in the 1900's called 'Grand Vitesse Goods Yard'.
I wanted to incorporate the 'Low Line' plaque currently in situ under the bridge. The Low Line initiative is aimed to open up the viaducts to pedestrians and encourage exploration of the historical areas in Southwark.
My design was inspired by the art deco style rail posters from the 1900's. I decided to draw an image as if it was an advertisement for the goods yard. I wanted it to be simple (as the mural is so large) and colorful to tie in with the vibrancy of Southwark.
The train is based upon the Wainwright C Class Steam Train. Which may have been used to carry goods around the time. The vanishing point of the train was designed to flow into the lowline plaque, thiu drawing more attention to it.
My design design was transformed into a mural by artist Lionel Stanhope.
