ABOUT

Gone are the days when busy professionals found time to sit down with a print newspaper and read it cover to cover to find out what’s going on in the world. That’s why our client, Dow Jones, recently approached us to recreate The Wall Street Journal’s most popular section for the modern day — What’s News. The column first appeared in print in 1934, and now with 44 percent of the Journal’s web traffic coming from mobile, the opportunity to reach this growing audience in an innovative way had become essential.

What’s News is the Journal’s first ever product made truly for mobile. Somo developed the iOS mobile application (Android to follow) that showcases the best of the news each hour, personally curated by the WSJ team. The What’s News app has been created specifically to enable people to dip in and out as it targets a time-poor audience that likes to read ambitiously to stay ahead of the news.

The app has been a great success, launching at #2 news app in iTunes and receiving media coverage from News & Tech, MediaPost, CampaignAsia, Nieman Journalism Lab, and more global media publications.
