ABOUT
Jump were commissioned by Retort to design and produce the title sequence for the comedy classic 'Birds of a Feather', now transmitted on ITV. The show was returning after a 16 year break for it's 10th series.
The previous titles featured a progression of stills of the two starring ladies (Pauline Quirke and Linda Robson) showing them growing together from babies into children, teenagers into adults. The theme tune was them singing Irving Berlin's 'What'll I do'.
Retort wanted to evolve this iconic sequence, bringing it up to date, and to include Lesley Joseph for the first time.
The music track was re-recorded including all three ladies, with Lesley joining in for the final phrase.
Our concept was to change the style of the photo to match the passing years. We start with the ladies seen as babies on an old black and white photo, which changes to Polaroids, super 8mm home movie, mounted slide, contact sheet, clip frame, SLR viewfinder, VHS recording, digital camera and for the final shot a digital display as if on a smartphone.
The images zoom back, falling away from us on the right hand side of frame, matching the position of the previous titles but adding more depth and production values to the sequence.
The photos featured include many from the previous sequence, including the home movie clip previously used on the end credits.
