ABOUT

My final year Graduate film which was created from July 2015-July 2016. Working as a team to create a lighthearted CG short with elements of despair and Helplessness. A dystopian story of a hungry fisherman (Manny) stranded on an Island with his best friend, a goat named Bernard. Surrounded by only garbage to eat, Manny struggles to carry on with his life until he sees something far in the sky.

We wanted to tell a story of the lengths he would go to travel to find some food worth eating.

We used Maya to Model, Rig and UV the characters, along with modelling the sets and environments using a mixture of Zbrush to sculpt and Maya for Hard surface. To create the hair simulation, we used Yeti combined with Arnold.

The FX work such as the fluids, flames and RDB sims where tried and tested in Maya. Some more CPU heavy tasks such as the large ocean shots and clouds, where done in Houdini and then cached back in.

The texturing was done using Photoshop and Mari.

It was a surprise we finished on time, considering the original length of the short was almost 4:20 seconds long. Without access to an efficient render farm we managed to keep convert the PC suite in the University as a makeshift one.

Overall it was a great Result, with many long nights and software crashes. Reel Of Fortune wouldn't have been do able without the entire team and pipeline we managed to develop to make sure everything was looking as high quality as it should be within the time constraints given.
