ABOUT
Limbs & Things is a Bristol based company that manufactures medical training products for healthcare professionals and students worldwide. The PROMPT Birthing Simulator is one of a number of Limbs & Things products which has been a huge success for the company since it was introduced back in 2006.
In 2013 Cubik Innovation were approached to investigate a redesign of the PROMPT system. The aim of the redesign was to remove the cabled umbilical connection to the control PC application, replacing it with a Bluetooth connection and to update the application software to run on multiple platforms.
Using our proven 5 Phase process Cubik innovated the design to include the following features:
- Force measurement using load cell technology
- Internal Lithium power source
- Contactless Inductive charging system
- Bluetooth classic and Bluetooth LE communications to the host
- Cross-platform control application (Developed in conjunction with our approved partner)
- Boot-loadable baby firmware, user upgradable to future-proof the design
In addition to the design of the baby electronics, embedded firmware, application software and charge dock, Cubik were also responsible for the development of the production test rigs for the electronics and the calibration software to allow the baby to be set up and calibrated in production.
During 2015 the PROMPT Flex Bluetooth system was released. Cubik delivered the electronic system ready to be fitted into enclosures and overmoulded into babies by Limbs & Things, as well as providing a contactless charging dock and application software to run on Windows, Android, iPad and MAC operating systems.
Following on from the success of the redesign, Cubik utilised its experience and knowledge of compliance testing to assist Limbs & Things with achieving CE and FCC marking for the PROMPT flex allowing sale in UK, EU and USA.
The in-house production department at Cubik are now active in the process of manufacturing and delivering electronic kits to Limbs & Things in batches of 100 ready for assembly into the molded baby.
