ABOUT

My painting, Digital Nerves, explores our relationship with technology and what it feels like to be human in a digital age. Although it can enrich our lives in many ways, it also has many well-documented negative effects upon us. For example, how does the constant stream of content (misinformation and information) which fills our social media streams on a 24-7 basis affect us? Is this gradually chipping away at our psyches and creating a sense of unease in our daily lives? I wanted the two characters in my painting to have a faraway look in their eyes. They're connected, yet disconnected. My use of fluorescent pink and green is designed to represent the nervous system - a subtle glimpse at what lies beneath our personas. The icons at the bottom represent smartphone OS navigation icons, but also call to mind ancient runes. Is there any link remaining to our previous selves in the days before mass-marketing and consumer technology?
