ABOUT

This project was created in my first year of my foundation degree studies. The brief was set by my tutor, and we were asked to create an alternative film poster for a randomly picked film title taken from a hat. We also had to have no prior knowledge of the film. I picked Before Sunrise. The task was to use Saul Bass’s cutout style to summaries the film within one image.
I first researched the film and looked at a synopsis of the story. I then watched the film, to gain a better understanding of the aspects
that would best represent the story and characters, The film is a story of two strangers, an amaerican traveling by train from Budapest to Vienna to board a flight back to New York, and a french student woman retruning to Paris to continue her studies. During the journey they become involved in a conversation with each other and when they reach Vienna, the American convinces the French woman to roam around Vienna until he has to board his early morning flight.
This gave me the idea of the stautue of
liberty an American icon, donated to America by the people of France. The statue wears a headress featuring spikes. I had the idea to replace the spikes with Eiffel Towers, to further symbolise the French character of the story. Also included in the finished image I added stars. As both contries flags contain the same colours, it was obvious to me that those would be the colours to use within the image itself. After illustrating the idea, I scanned it and then opened it in Adobe Illustrator where I created the final piece.
