ABOUT
KAY was my final year product design project at the University of Brighton, where by I spent over 9 months, researching, testing, failing, testing again failing and making, all to produce KAY. A user driven project, heavily focussed on how elderly arthritic users opened jars and how their own capabilities could be increased to maintain a strong sense of independence and to avoid the common stigmatism assistive devices can have for the users.
The working prototype mechanism, which can be seen in my elevator pitch video, comprises of a hacked together mechanism from an existing product and modified parts that I created. The prototype proves that mechanical advantage can be used to open a jar easily and with little effort. Due to time constraints of my final year of study the devices mechanism is still in the prototype stage, being developed and tested. The images show what the final product looks like and its context of use.
