ABOUT

A nuclear accident can take thousands of lives. The nuclear industry is continuing to develop - so the list of failures and accidents will also continue to grow.

In 1957 the first nuclear disaster occurred in Russia. At the time nobody understood how radionuclides spread into the environment. Soviet nuclear officials created an experimental research station. It was a unique and secret part of the Mayak plutonium plant. All the operations were top secret.

If the scientists’ research had been widely announced, people would know how radiation enters human bodies. The thing is that, even while living on a polluted territory, there are steps people can take to preserve their health.

Only a few of the scientists of the secret laboratory are still alive and they are eager to speak. People need to understand what they have to do in case of danger, how they can keep their families alive.
