ABOUT

The focus of this photography project was to capture the diverse landscapes of Iceland during their winter conditions. Winter landscapes we normally associate with muted colors, grey skies, dormant vegetation and high contrast between land and snow or ice. What is compelling to me that I wanted to explore is the contradictions to those typical “winterscape” attributes that one finds in Icelandic winter landscapes.

Iceland’s landscapes in the winter are often filled with rich and vibrant color. The island’s short winter days create long slow sunrises and sunsets lasting hours rather than minutes. These lengthy sunrises and sunsets dramatically illuminating incredible weather conditions brought on by Iceland’s location in relation to the Jetstream. And Iceland’s extreme northern position exposing the snow covered landscapes to the astounding colors of the aurora borealis.

Even with extensive preparation and planning, shooting a photography project in Iceland with a specific focus can be challenging. The inherent nature of a photographer is to be drawn to interesting light, story, grandeur or intimate scene; all of which Iceland has in spades.
