Blog of the month - Book Cover Archive

If books were judged by their covers, then this would be like an exclusive library of turner prize winners.

Our blog of the month title this month goes to the Book Cover Archive. An online gallery showcasing and categorsing beautiful cover designs. As the site says, "for the purpose of appreciation and categorisation", this site is well worth a look.

Sandro Kopp – turning Skype into an artform

Skype - the first time video conferencing has ever properly worked and an excellent form of international communication which doesn't cost the earth whilst retaining a sense of personability. In many ways Skype has been an inspiration to the modern age but Sandro Kopp has gone one step further by using the program as an intregral part of his art practice. Click the link to check out Kopp's oil paint portraits of his Skype subjects, part of his exhibition just lauched at the Istancool Festival in Germany ...

Brian Duffy and Aladdin Sane

Creativity happens in different ways. Sometimes you need do no more than put a group of highly talented people in a room and then wait and see what happens. Ideas bounce around. Somebody says something that sparks somebody else. That was the creative process behind the album sleeve design for 'Aladdin Sane'. Shot by Duffy, it is still one of the most iconic images in rock. And check out Duffy's contact sheet from the shoot.

End of the reel for film?

In the last Creativepool poll we asked you if the traditional ad mediums of TV and radio would ever catchup with online advertising. The response overwhelmingly believed that the runaway train of online advertising will never be caught.

This week we want you have your say on whether non-digital cameras will always have a place in profesisonal photography.

New school clicking or old school snapping?

Will no-one think of the children?

'Clearly, the welfare of children must always be our priority. They are impressionable, vulnerable and it is our responsibility to shield them from harm. However, the coalition government's efforts to demonise advertising as a corrupter of infant morals and young people's wholesomeness is not only misguided, it's hypocritical and untrue. Magnus Shaw takes a closer look.'

Reach for the (All) Stars

Ever owned a pair of Converse All Stars? Then you're going to like Ashley's blog this week. Back in 1960, basketball shoes weren't the air-filled, springy, ankle-supporting hugs-in-a-shoe that they are today. They were pretty basic, not very ergonomically designed with a comparatively thin sole, and they made one heck of a squeak on the court too. But more than any other sports shoe in history, something about the design endorsed by Chuck Taylor (basketball player for the Akron Firestones) rang true not just with basketball-loving Americans, but across the world.

The highest form of flattery?

Sometimes an idea comes along that blows everything else out the water. It steals the show. Everyone else in the field runs to unashamedly claim their profitable seat of the bandwagon. This is the imitation game. But it can be a dangerous and short-lived affair.

What's the real relationship here between the originators and the imitators?
