17 April 2012

Hi,

It's all about us this week!

The development work on the site has been continuing apace and over the past 2 weeks we have launched 5 major upgrades on the site.

We have 3 major changes to how the site works for you!
Login with Facebook and Google - this is the forerunner to us being able to connect you to all your workmates through Creativepool and to keep up to date with what they are doing on the site.
PDF portfolio upload - This is probably the most requested feature that we have ever had. You can now at the click of a button upload your entire portfolio to your profile.
Youtube, Vimeo, Flickr and SoundCloud support - you can now upload any work that you have from any of these sites onto your profile.

If you have any other features that you think that we should have on the site them please email me michael@creativepool.co.uk

Advice

Thanks but no thanks - the rejection letter from hell

We all know the problem. You apply for the job of your dreams (or at least one that will suffice) and wait for a response. And you wait and you wait. Employers have a tendency to fail in their duty to respond to unsuccessful candidates - but what if they respond with several thousand words of long, harsh critique? One employer took this approach and Magnus Shaw read the email.

Industry News

Tax Breaks for the Creative Industry

The future was seemingly looking bright last month in The Budget 2012. After 10 years of hard work, pushing for changes to policy related to taxation for the gaming and animation sector, they were both given tax breaks. As much as this was intended to restore the industries faith in the government this hasn't been the case for all. What do freelancers have to say about the coming year?

Adam Edworthy

This showreel was created by Creativepool member Adam Edworthy. He has a talent for motion graphics and mixes this with his styistic illustration designs to create an impressive visual experience. His skill has landed him some big names to add to his client list with Unilever, NEXT, Arsenal FC and Microsoft Xbox being some of the notable brands.

Don't say a word...just watch!

Copywriting

Roald Dahl - More than mere talent

Sure he wrote some brilliant children’s books but Roald Dahl was a creative genius in more ways than one. In fact, here was a guy whose talents knew no bounds. John has written a fine little potted history about the great man and even provides some pics taken inside his garden and around his house.

Social Media

Facebook Vs. CVs - is it ok for employers to stalk applicants?

As time rolls on our Facebook pages are collecting more and more information on our private and social lives, in five years time they will contain more juicy messages from dubious exes and photographs from stag dos which should have really be forgotten than any teenage diary could ever rival. All this is well and good when only relished by your mates but just imagine your boss-to-be of your dream job having a sneaky peak before they have even called your in for an interview. Scary. Worryingly enough Facebook stalking is becoming the norm for prospective employees once they have downloaded your CV and have decided you are worth a second look. Is this morally wrong or has Facebook become as realistic a reflection on a person as it is going to get? Read on, adjust your privacy settings and then leave your thoughts on the issue...

Put a stop to stalking...

This week's top LinkedIn discussions

We have a number of groups on LinkedIn that give you a chance to talk, albeit online, to other creatives. As always there's plenty of discussions going on. We have three groups: the main Creativepool Network is for everyone working in the creative industries, we also have a Creative Director only group and one especially for freelancers.

On the main group the showdown of the pen vs the mouse is on: Are the days of the traditional hand drawn marker visuals numbered?

On the freelance network If I weren't a freelance designer I would be...

The Creative Network pick for this week is one that everyone has been keen to get involved with: Promote yourself! Tell us all about you and what you do! Apparently we're enjoying talking about ourselves! No bad thing...
