FLUX is a series of portraits of young people transitioning from childhood to adulthood. Through racial diversity, physical and mental health issues, sexual discovery, a political voice, faith, families and friendships, these young people challenge the stereotype of what it is to be a young person in Scotland today.
This project was inspired by the young people who campaigned during the 2014 Scottish Independence Referendum. For the first time in a long time, their opinions were not only heard, but significantly impacted the result. I wanted to celebrate this by exploring what else young people were capable of. I contacted a range of schools, charities, churches and youth groups with the hope of finding a diverse range of potential sitters. I expected the young people to be one thing; LGBT, religious, political, disabled, musical... But the people I met were so much more than any one label. They were, of course, multi faceted, just like an adult. I learned a lot from these young people and hope that my series conveys their abilities, personalities and lifestyles accurately.
