What we've learned from the new James Bond: Spectre trailer

Published by

You saw it, right? How could you miss it? Even ITV's News At Ten ran the trailer for 'SPECTRE', the next episode in the most successful movie franchise ever - James Bond. Immediately the world took to social media (or at least the section of the world without anything better to do) to complain the trailer gave away to much, or not enough, or whatever. So what have we learned from the couple of minutes we've been permitted to view? What does 'SPECTRE' hold in store for us?

*007's in trouble again

Ralph Fiennes is back as 'M', and here he's telling James (Daniel Craig, of course) he had no authority to do something or other (quite possibly a freelance assassination in Mexico). 'M' doesn't look happy.

Moneypenny thinks Bond is finished

She says so. 'I'm just getting started', James replies, however. Which suggests this is one of those occasions when 007 is freelancing.

*The Aston Martin DB-10 is back

For car junkies (Richard Hammond or Noddy, for instance), this is the best news ever. We also see Q telling Bond he's added some new tricks to the classic car. Of course he has.

'SPECTRE' isn't a red herring.

There were some rumours that the new movie's title didn't actually refer to the conglomeration of bad guys Bond has battled before. But in the trailer we see a finger-ring and computer screen with the organisation's dragon/octopus/bat logo thing engraved upon it.

*James will be getting it on.

No huge surprises here. If there's one thing we all know about Bond, is that he's a hit with the ladies and legendary swordsman. This trailer tells us Monica Bellucci will be the beneficiary of some 007 lovin' this time around. And several other beauties, presumably.

Madeleine Swann (Lea Seydoux), for instance

Although we see Madeleine in some car chase action, rather than the bedroom variety, it seems a racing certainty that she's a key figure in 'SPECTRE' and won't be immune to James' charms.

007 is listed as dead

This is all very ambiguous, but we're shown a memorial engraved with the names of agents who have given their lives for their country. And, yes, Bond's name has been added. Whether this is a threat, or an attempt by 007 to cover his tracks, we can't be sure.

*There's a proper baddie

And he's called Franz Oberhauser. But that might just be Ernst Stavros Blofeld's using a pseudonym. Either way, we know he's played by double Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz. “What took you so long?", he asks 007 as he looms from the darkness. He seems pretty chuffed at whatever he's been up to, too. Not shoplifting, we can safely assume.

There's a helicopter that flies upside down

We don't know who's in it, nor who owns it. It appears that Bond has killed the pilot. Before you try this at home, please note that helicopters cannot fly upside down.

*That bloke from 'Sherlock' is in it. He doesn't like 007

Andrew Scott puts in an appearance as a new character called 'Max Denbigh'. Fans assure us he's the new head of the Centre for National Security, and his thing is to question Bond’s actions and challenge the relevance of MI6.

SPECTRE in UK cinemas on October 23 and elsewhere in early November.
And that's a fact.
