Hundreds of scholarships available for 2015 Masters courses at University of the Arts London

University of the Arts London is the world’s leading specialist creative university and hosts the largest postgraduate arts and design community in Europe. UAL draws together six Colleges with international reputations in art, design, fashion, communication and performing arts: Camberwell College of Arts, Central Saint Martins, Chelsea College of Arts, London College of Communication, London College of Fashion, and Wimbledon College of Arts.

Applications are now open for the UAL Vice-Chancellor’s Postgraduate Scholarships, which will waive 50% of the Home/EU tuition fee on qualifying UAL Masters courses starting in the 2015/2016 academic year. The programme will also grant ten international awards of £25,000 to help pay the tuition fees and costs associated with moving to and studying in the UK.

‘If I had not received a Scholarship I would not have been able to raise the funds to partake in my Masters course, so I am very grateful.’

Sean Murphy is currently studying for an MA in Graphic Design Communication at Chelsea College of Arts. His comment gets to the very heart of the aim of the Vice-Chancellor’s Postgraduate Scholarships – to break down the financial barriers in the way of talented arts graduates planning to continue their studies at higher levels.

Further study can be difficult to finance, but the impact of postgraduate qualifications on employability and lifetime earnings cannot be ignored. According to The Sutton Trust Postgraduate Premium report (2013), professionals with a Masters degree can expect to earn £5,500 more per year. The future is even brighter for professionals in the UK creative industries, as creative employment is outgrowing the rest of the economy.

The UK Government’s recent Autumn Statement took steps to address the current gap in postgraduate taught finance. As a result, undergraduate level students who qualify for the Home/EU category of tuition fee status who studied under the higher fee rate from the academic year of 2012/2013 could be eligible for a £10,000 award from a Postgraduate Support Scheme. UAL is a member of this scheme, which could benefit eligible students applying for taught Masters course starting in the 2015/2016 academic year.

Postgraduate study at UAL is stimulating and full of opportunities. Regina Souli who studied for the MRes Art: Exhibition Studies degree at Central Saint Martins says:

“The course gave me a new perspective on my design practice. It has been invaluable to my professional work. Whilst on the course, I was particularly interested in the history of graphic and architectural design in the field of contemporary art exhibitions and for my final research project I focused on ‘Cities on the Move’, for an exhibition which took place at the Hayward Gallery.”

Want to help shape the future of creativity?

Applications for UAL’s Vice-Chancellor’s Postgraduate Scholarships will be received until Friday 29 May 2015, 4pm GMT. Only applicants who satisfy certain eligibility criteria will be considered.
