Tom Dixon designs new co-working space, Interchange, in Camden

Published by

Tom Dixon’s Design Research Studio has created the interiors for a new space for start-ups in North London called “Interchange,” marking the first time the designer has created a co-working space. The space is spread over three sites in Camden. The Atrium and Triangle spaces are in Camden Markets and open next month, while a further space, called “Utopia,” is open now in Primrose Hill, and provides larger office space for growing and established companies.

Interchange’s backers Market Tech Holdings, a public company that combines iconic real estate assets with e-commerce, say start-ups that are part of the initiative will have the opportunity to open retail space in Camden Market. The Camden spaces have been designed by architect Barr Gazetas, with interiors by Dixon, who recently opened a unique “Pop-up department store” at the Old Selfridges Hotel as part of the London Design Festival, and his Design Research Studio.

As well as office space, the development, which is focused on true community working, features an on-site gym, restaurant, bar and event spaces. Market Tech Holdings say it will also provide access to affiliate investors and industry specialists. Workspace available ranges from flexible desk space that can be rented by the day to private officers for larger companies, while the design features expert curation of complex floor plans and space use. Start-ups will also have the unique opportunity to establish their own retail space in the iconic Camden Markets, which has over 28 million visitors per year and is London’s third largest business district after the City and Westminster.

Vanessa Butz, managing director of Interchange, said of the project: “We have been inspired by the history of the market as a key ‘Interchange’ of commerce and trade and we’re now supporting the future of business in Camden. The area has a strong community of creatives, artists and designers, which is another reason why it’s a perfect location for new companies.” Charles Butler, CEO of Market Tech, added: “Camden Markets has always been a strong supporter of entrepreneurs, with the variety of traders that make up its eclectic and vast retail area. With the addition of Interchange, we see this as a great opportunity to further support start-ups and small businesses to realise their potential within this vibrant environment.”
