M&C Saatchi gets a Brazilian

Published by

Last week, M&C Saatchi bought a stake in the multi-award winning Brazilian agency, Santa Clara, on of the top five creative advertising agencies in the LATAM region. The agency is led by partner and CEO Ulisses Zamboni and partner and CCO Fernando Campos, and is headquartered in the creative hub of São Paulo. The announcement comes at the peak of a significant period of growth for the agency, which has seen revenues increase by 50% over the last four years and a spell of major award wins at the Cannes Lions, The One Show, the Effies, and Prêmio De Mídia among many others. It has also managed to amass an eclectic range of clients that include Timberland, Cartoon Network, and Grupo Boticario.

Zamboni said that, due to the robust growth of the agency in recent years, Santa Clara felt the need to increase their “Competitive edge” locally, an edge that a partnership with an international network is sure to help sharpen. He believes that M&C Saatchi will help them to increase their “Technical capabilities in the digital segment, mobile, CRM and in activation programmes,” But most importantly, being part of M&C Saatchi will allow them us to work locally, in their own way, without losing their own decidedly Brazilian identity.

Moray MacLennan, Worldwide CEO at M&C Saatchi, summed up the partnership with a football analogy. He said that “Alex Ferguson said that he never wanted to buy a player that another club wanted to sell,” and that is the same approach they take when finding a new partner agency. He said that “Santa Clara didn’t want to sell their agency,” but they wanted to join the M&C Saatchi network. He adds that “Brazil is a top 5 market in both ad spend and creativity,” which is why they were so intent on making this investment in one of the country's top agencies. M&C Saatchi, he feels, “Has at its core clarity of thinking and an entrepreneurial spirit both of which are reflected in Santa Clara,” and he looks forward to their shared future together.

For M&C Saatchi, 2015 has been an incredibly eventful year in terms of global expansion, with some major purchases under its belt, such as the acquisition of a majority stake in the Tel Aviv, Israel-based agency Ben-Natan Golan in January. The network also invested in SS+K in New York last November, and acquired the Lean Mean Fighting Machine agency in the UK, the agency which won Interactive Ad Agency of the Year in Cannes.
