Simon Needham - ATTIK

Guy Duncan

What do you actually do?
From a business standpoint, I'm involved in the day-to-day management of ATTIK. My title is Executive Creative Director, so I oversee all the creative that comes out of the agency. I evaluate creative, direct broadcast, and do some photography. Talent is also incredibly important to us, so I make sure to meet potential new hires and interface with all our creatives. Most importantly, I'm also very keyed-into the needs of our clients and assist in client service. Every single day is different from the next, where I'm in one major city or another, going from one meeting to the next from 8:30 in the morning until 6:30 at night, usually eating lunch in the meetings. Amidst all of this, I also spend many weeks each year inside darkened rooms, collaborating with the world's leading post-production artists so that our work will look as good as it possibly can..

What would you be doing if you weren't doing that?
Even if I could avoid some of the more stressful aspects of running a business, I'd still choose to be doing what I do now. Other than that, maybe I'd be doing MMA training every day, since that's how I spend just about every minute when I'm not working.

How did you get started in the industry?
At age 18, my partner and I started our own graphic design company straight out of art college in his grandma's attic.

What's your favourite piece of creative work at the moment?
I suppose my favorite piece of creative is our series of Noise books. In many ways, they are a representation of who I am, and they definitely encapsulate what I want ATTIK to be.

What do you love about your job?
The variety of it. Although the downs are tough, there are amazing ups as well. It's unpredictable but always fun and challenging. It's great to be able to do something as a living that you would do as a hobby.

If you could give one piece of advice for someone starting out, what would it be?
For someone going into business, focus on the bottom line over ego, and be frugal when spending. For people going into the creative industry, to be successful, always strive for perfection. Even though it can be a hellish place to live, that level of dedication will differentiate you from everyone else.

If you have one Super power what would it be?
I'll have to get back to you on that one.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
Mate, I never want to grow up.

What was your worst job and what did you learn from it?
Probably working in a supermarket. Stacking shelves taught me what type of work I didn't want to do.

You have already worked with some amazing brands, who would you like to work with next?
Honestly, anybody that wants to make big difference for their company.

Iphone or Blackberry?
iPhone.

Your favourite app?
Google Maps.

Too Cool for School or too School for Cool?
The first one.

Facebook or Twitter?
Facebook

Eat In or eat out?
Eat out. I live in LA right now and my favorite place to eat is Thai Town – I eat there every couple of weeks. See you there?
