We are looking for a graphic designer to join the Outreach and Training Team at the European Bioinformatics Institute (EMBI-EBI) located on the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus near Cambridge in the UK.
The post-holders primary responsibilities will be to create and maintain a range of engaging and effective communications materials, and to liaise with key individuals throughout the organisation to establish a visual asset library. The incumbent will also work with the Outreach Programme Project Leader to ensure that the design of our high-level web pages is inviting, appropriately branded and up to date, and that the look and feel of our social media sites (e.g. blogs, social media) is consistent and dynamic.
Additional responsibilities include design and layout of printed reports, brochures, posters, exhibition materials and promotional merchandise, and periodically contributing to the visual branding of projects that are connected to EMBL-EBI. Importantly, the incumbent will be a key point of contact for visual resources at EMBL-EBI, including an image bank, slide sets and templates.
The Outreach and Training team coordinates an extensive bioinformatics training programme. We also work with journalists, teachers, students and other interested members of the public to raise awareness about how bioinformatics can lead to discoveries that impact our lives.
The EBI, part of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), is a world leading bioinformatics centre providing biological data to the scientific community with expertise in data storage, analysis and representation. EMBL-EBI provides a dynamic, international working environment and has close ties with both the University of Cambridge and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate will be educated to diploma or degree level, ideally in a subject of relevance to design. Additional experience or training in information architecture, user-experience design or human–computer interaction would be desirable.
Active involvement in the design community is important, with at least three years’ experience of working in graphic design, and a portfolio that includes both web and print design projects.
Experience working with graphic design and web design software (e.g. Adobe Creative Suite), excellent conceptual skills and the ability to work with colleagues at all levels to turn ideas into high-impact products is essential.
The successful candidate will be well organised, have excellent time-management skills and be able to prioritise projects. They will enjoy working in a team and meeting new people but also able to work under their own initiative. The ability to communicate equally well with developers, scientists and ‘media people’ is essential.
You will be asked to supply examples of your work and to complete a short practical.
