We have a fantastic opportunity with a leading UK children's publisher for a talented Designer (£21,000 - £25,000 per annum) to take responsibility for all design elements. This is a temporary role for 6 months to 1 year to cover maternity leave based in Dorking, Surrey.

The successful Designer will be a key part of the creative team, working closely with editorial and production, and contributing creative ideas for all areas of the list.

Reporting to the company Publisher, the Designer’s main responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

-Designing covers and interior spreads for new titles/series. 

-Sourcing and commissioning out of house illustrators and designers for projects according to allocated budgets.

-Sketching page layouts to brief illustrators.

-Re-designing covers for existing back list titles according to specs from new customers. 

-Picture research for photographic elements. 

-Generating ideas for new title and series concepts, including researching existing titles on the market.

-Working closely with editors to ensure smooth running of projects. .

-Creating and supplying sales material including panels for book fairs and pdfs/jpegs when required. 

-Project managing designers and illustrators ensuring work is completed to a high standard and delivered according to schedule.

The ideal Designer will possess the following skills and experience:

-3 years’ industry experience in children's co-edition publishing (desirable but not essential)

-Advanced proficiency in Adobe creative suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).

-Typographic and layout skills. 

-Ability to brief illustrators and designers.

-Organisational and communication skills. 

-Ability to generate ideas and visualise concepts.

-Ability to manage heavy workload effectively. 

Hours of work are Mon-Fri, 9am to 5.30pm.
